ITINERARY

Sarria - Portomarin ---> 22.2 km

An interesting stage without any significant difficulties , with frequent but moderate changes in elevation . Today we travel through rural Galicia , between meadows and lush oak and chestnut forests , encountering countless small villages or "lugares" (hamlets) . The medieval town of Portomarín disappeared in 1963 beneath the waters of the Belesar reservoir ; the most historically significant buildings were relocated to the current town, situated atop a nearby hill.

Porto Marin - Palas de rei ---> 22.8 km

The route today follows the same pattern as yesterday , progressing through rural areas and crossing small villages . Reforestation with pines and eucalyptus trees is beginning to relegate the native forest . Although the changes in elevation are moderate , in the first half of the stage we ascend from 350 meters to 725 meters .

Palas de rei - Arzua ---> 28.5 km

The route follows the N-547 highway, which we cross several times , in a continuous series of ups and downs , especially after Melide , due to the numerous streams that run parallel to our path. In Melide, we find two of the most renowned octopus restaurants in Spain , where they serve excellent Galician-style octopus accompanied by genuine Ribeiro wine .

Arzua - O pedrouzo ---> 19.3 km

A comfortable stage with few changes in elevation ; we proceed along long forest tracks , crossing woods and meadows . As in the previous stage, we follow the N-547 highway: take care when crossing it . Spending the night in O Pedrouzo puts us at an ideal distance to arrive tomorrow for the Pilgrim's Mass , which is celebrated daily at noon in the Cathedral of Santiago .

O pedrouzo - SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA ---> 19.4 KM

With the exception of the initial section , today we walk through an area subjected to intense urban development : airport, residential areas, highways, workshops… The stage has no significant elevation changes ; the climb to Monte do Gozo is moderately steep . The emotion , after so many kilometers and some difficulties, is intense, and nothing can now spoil our triumphant entrance into the Plaza del Obradoiro ; entering the cathedral will bring an unforgettable experience to a close. In the cultural sphere, it is worth noting that the Historic Quarter of Santiago de Compostela is one of the best preserved in Europe ; the cathedral , which houses the tomb of the Apostle James , is entirely monumental , with the Pórtico de la Gloria (Portico of Glory ) standing out as a masterpiece of Spanish Romanesque architecture .
